Finding a skincare routine that works for your skin is so important. Not only will it make you feel more comfortable in your own skin, but it is also likely to save you hundreds of dollars.
Don’t get me wrong, I love browsing Sephora as much as the next girl an I did for years. However, despite leaving probably several paychecks with them over the years and trying out every high-end skincare brand they have on offer, none worked. They’d either leave my skin dry and flaky (an accomplishment if you consider that I’ve always had to battle oily skin) or had no effect at all. There was a particularly memorable pore tightening serum I had recommended by the sales lady to combat blackheads. All it did was to nicely lock them in my skin.
Sunscreens have always been a nightmare for my skin. No matter which one I used, all of them clogged my pores and gave me terrible and painful breakouts within twenty-four hours. Facemasks have until recently proven a giant waste of money and no matter how much moisturizer I used my body would always be dry.
Ever since moving to somewhere with questionable wastewater management strategies I’ve made a concerted effort to use products with a lower environmental impact. Ironically this has also helped a good deal with my skin’s health.
If you were to stop reading right here because you don’t believe in natural skin care alternatives, at least let me give you one advice that will change your skin for the better:
ditch the daily foundation and bb-creams
I know that this may be a daunting step. It was for me but it was also the first thing that significantly improved my complexion. It will take some time but if you have really problematic skin that layer of makeup doesn’t make your skin look any better anyway.
I use these four products every day
I’ve come across this soap only a few months ago but Dr, Bronner’s has a very long history in the US. You probably know them already. They make organic 100% vegetable-based soaps that are totally biodegradable, which means you can use them even while camping by a river. In fact, you can use them as shampoo, laundry detergent or cleaner as well. The smell is amazing. I’ve tried ‘eucalyptus’ and ‘rose’ so far and both smell like the real thing. Since using Dr Bronner’s I haven’t had much need for a moisturizer. my skin hardly feels dry anymore. I use this on my face as well and it leaves the skin feeling clean without stripping it of its natural protective barrier.
I wish I had found this sunscreen sooner. I have spent way too much time in the brutal tropical sun without sunscreen because I didn’t want to look like a smallpox victim the next day. This is sadly not a natural product and isn’t reef save either. It is, however, a tremendously strong sunscreen that once applied protects for hours even in the water. What I love most about the clear stick is the fact that it is invisible. Its consistency is much like a lip balm allowing you to apply a thin layer onto your face without wasting any of it on your hands. Honestly, try it, it’s magical and worth every cent. I’ve had mine for about two months and even though I use it every day there’s still plenty left.
I’m not sure this is available in the US right now. I bought mine in Mexico and I know that it is available in Spain as well. This is a new kind of biodegradable sunscreen. Okay, it is an oil and super moisturizing without leaving the typical sunscreen film. I use this on my body on a daily basis and it works well. I can put this on and shoot pictures for a few hours in a bikini without getting burned.
Okay, this is not really a skincare product but I’ve been dying to mention it because it is, hands down, the best deodorant I’ve ever tried. It comes in three scents: Lavender & Amber, Patchouli & Orange and Cypress & Vervene and they all smell sensational. They also keep me smelling good all day long, it’s the only deodorant I’ve tried so far that I don’t need to reapply during the day. I’m not sure where to buy it outside of Mexico but it is worth hunting it down.
If I had to choose one product to give credit to for transforming my skin then it would be the clay I use twice a week as a mask. It is the cheapest skincare I’ve ever used, 100% natural and does amazing work softening my skin. I’ve always battled with very tough skin that would just trap zits underneath and make it impossible for them to come to the surface. I’d be left with painful bumbs underneath my skin that refused to go away no matter how much spot treatment I applied. This mask instantly softend my skin and allows me to gently remove black heads and zits.
It is simply a clay ground to a very fine powder that I mix with a little bit of water until it forms a paste and then apply to my clean face. I let it dry for about 7-10 minutes and then wash it off with plenty of water.
Warning: This mask occasionally leaves a greenish stain on my cheeks. The stain disappears within a few hours but you probably shouldn’t use this mask right before your date with that super cute guy/girl.
And this are the products that transformed my skin. Since using them my skin has seen way fewer breakouts that were a lot less severe, has been more radiant and overall smoother and feels softer and younger. I’m by no means saying that this a one fits all solution but if you’re like me and you’ve spend hundreds of dollars on skincare products that do nothing at all, this might be worth a try.
