I wander along the beach, hair playing perfectly in the wind. An intricate dance between hair and elements. I dive graciously into the waves and exit the water with my hair impeccably sleeked down, water glistening on it.
Or at least that is how I like to imagine my beach hair looks. In truth, with my hair down, I’ll look as if I just took a stroll in a grade 5 hurricane. That’s if my hair isn’t wet and I don’t look like a drowned rat. In all honesty, this is likely because I haven’t seen a hairdresser in like a year and a half. I am changing that today, however, and will be opting for a super choppy lob.
The idea behind this is that a deliberately messy haircut will make my hairstyle look deliberately unstyled with a minimum of effort.
For bad hair days
I have a few go-to hairstyles for bad hair days and a fall back in case my haircut goes horribly wrong. I am super fond of romantic braids, like the crown braid and hats and bandanas.
The Crown Braid
The crown braid is one of my favourite hairstyles. It’s easy to do and totally romantic and beautiful. And besides being totally wedding-worthy, you can wear it to the beach or while running across a meadow. Simply pick a spot where you’d like to start braiding and somewhat french-braid braid around your head adding hair as you go. Once you’ve finished your way around braid down the remaining hair and secure the entire braid with bobby pins. For those who stare at me disbelievingly. There is a great tutorial here. The Fake Fishtail Braid
Remember those insanely thick fishtail braids that popped up everywhere for a while? Try as I might I could never get mine to look that fluffy. No wonder when you consider that most of them work with fake hair pieces. Free People has the answer to your troubles and features a beautiful and simple tutorial for a faux fishtail-braid that is insanely easy and done in minutes. You can find the full tutorial here or save the Pin below for later.
The Messy Boho Braids
I’m totally in love with messy partially braided hair. It is such a versatile way of styling your hair. Adding a few messy braids into your hair can give you that super romantic boho-look or turn you into a badass warrior queen from straight out of a tv show. I honestly end up looking more like something out of the 100 than the romantic boho babe. The loose part of my hair gets all tangled up and messy after a while but that’s okay. I’m more grounder than beauty pageant anyway. This tutorial by Ariba Pervaiz is great for messy Boho braids. Follow the link or save the Pin below for later.
Hats and Hair Scarves
I am seriously in love with hats and hair scarves. They’re just lifesavers when you’re short on time, have a bad hair day or are spending considerable amounts of time out in the sun. I always wear a hat when I’m out shooting pictures. Not only does it look good, but it also adds some extra protection from the sun. I’m also totally obsessed with hair scarves to brighten an outfit at night and just add a little extra boho vibe. Check out our absolute favourites in the gallery.
