I’m so glad you’re joining me for my first 5 things I’m in love with right now post. July is well underway and we’re currently scrambling to get organized for our El Salvador trip. I am super stoked to head back to my favourite Central American country.
With us trying to keep the apartment somewhat clean and organized, fighting over which boards to bring, convincing Walter that now is a terrible time to get a puppy or even worse a kitten and going out and shooting pictures it’s been pretty crazy. The internet still drops out at random intervals for hours and knowing that I’ll spend half the month with very little to no internet access at all means that I’ll have to plan and write ahead for once. I am working ahead and have always had a stormy love affair with deadlines.
There are a few more things I am totally in love with right now that are a lot healthier than sleepless nights and chasing deadlines. The number one reason I haven’t gotten crazy right now, is probably that I put on an audiobook whenever I edit photos or create graphics. I’ve done this since my childhood days. Whenever I’m doing something that doesn’t require my full brain capacity, I’ll put on an audiobook and transport myself into another world. This is just how I roll and I don’t care how many studies tell me that this makes me work less effectively. I can’t work while listening to all those “concentration playlists” and produce anything of worth. They drive me insane!
#1 The Iron Druid Chronicles
Okay, time for a confession: I am a total nerd sometimes and I love fantasy books and computer games. Yupp, I love being active and outside but occasionally I want nothing more than to disappear into another world for a while. Walter thinks I’m weird because I don’t like reading any of the critically acclaimed classics he loves so much. Well, I like Hemmingway but he also has an amazing style. But I’d much rather read about an epic battle between good and evil than a road trip during the great depression.
Currently, I’m rereading or rather re-listening to Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles and they’re exactly as good as I remember. When his arch-enemy finally catches up with a 2000-year-old druid and his Irish wolfhound, said druid is being spun into a nine-part odyssey during which druid Atticus rubs pretty much every deity and supernatural being to ever exist the wrong way and plunges the world into chaos.
If you’re looking for an extremely entertaining fantasy story believably set in our modern world with a touch of environmentalism and such lovable characters as a werewolf-lawyer obsessed with citrus-scented air fresheners, a love-starved death goddess and an Irish widow that likes to go to church “merry”, look no further. The Iron Druid chronicles have it all.
#2 My Sony A6000
The Sony A6000 and I have been inseparable since I got it for my birthday last month. Oh my God, does this little camera take amazing pictures! I am so excited to take it to El Salvador and shoot surfing pictures there. I’m already planning a surf trip up and down the Oaxacan coast for when we come back and am super excited for that as well.
I am obsessed with the smell of rain on dry soil. It makes me feel utterly alive. Ozone, dust and wet greenery all mingle with the salt from the ocean. It is a magical moment like a long-held breath let out in a sigh when the first drops fall. I love the rainy season. If I had my way there would be a short and violent rainstorm every day. Unfortunately, that would also mean that we’d be living in one continuous blackout without any internet. Since daily rainstorms aren’t happening anyway I’m just savouring the occasional moments of petrichor right now.
Watermelon is magical! Repeat with me: Watermelon is magical! Honestly, is there anything better than a cold slice of watermelon on a hot summer day? It’s refreshing, healthy and so pretty. Walter can eat an entire watermelon in one sitting. Honestly, I don’t know where he puts it all. I like to eat mine bit by bit and nibble it off the rind rather than cube it and eat it with a fork.
On top of being magical on its own, it is also amazing when blended up with some mint and ice into a slushy or with some balsamic vinegar and feta cheese as a salad.
#5 Super Chunky Sweaters
Yupp, this is super random, Or, actually, it isn’t. Every summer I get to a point where I’m kind of “over it”. A few days where I can be found scouring Pinterest for winter clothing, comfort food recipes and hot apple cider drinks. I don’t care that I am sweating my ass off in 32°C weather, that the sun is beating down and I’m melting on my way to the corner store. I want it to be winter right there and then and nothing will convince me otherwise. This obsession with cold weather will fade again quickly and soon I’ll be looking at summer dresses again. But until then, I’ll imagine the feel of soft chunky knit on my skin and a cup of hot liquid in my hands.
