Diving is absolutely amazing. There is a certain tranquillity that I haven’t experienced anywhere else. As you leave the confines of gravity all the feelings of negativity and anxiety disappear as well.
Whether you are a seasoned diver, new to the game or still need to dip your toes for the first time, our list of inspiring short films about diving will inspire you and make you yearn for the ocean. Grab your mask and fins, girls and let’s dive into a stunning and mysterious world.
#1 Dive Odyssey by Janne Kasperi Suhonen
Dive Odyssey has it all. Ice Diving? Check! Cave Diving? Check! A badass female diver? Double Check! Seriously, there is a reason why this is number one on this list. What begins as a foreboding descent into darkness quickly transcends into an ode to the exploration of the unknown. Dive Odyssey also shows us that the depths of space and the depths of our own planet are not that different. Both hold incredible potential for philosophical musings and exploration.
#2 The Power Within Kiki Bosch
More than the footage itself it was the amazing bravery ice freediver Kiki Bosch shows in this movie. She tells us how and why she began ice diving and about the trauma that caused it. And she has an important message: I’m not my history, I’m not my past and I’m not my future. We are at the moment. Kiki Bosch found her salvation in freediving the freezing waters of Iceland and has created a stunning short film about trauma, guilt and survival in the process.
#3 The Fish Vortex starring Anna von Boetticher
Another amazing freediving short film I stumbled onto by a complete accident. Freediver Anna von Boetticher not only dives into a bait ball but merges with it. The interplay of human and fish is amazing to watch and totally makes us want to learn how to free dive. It doesn’t hurt that the camera and soundtrack are perfectly executed as well. Anna von Boetticher takes us into another world where she dances with forces not quite understood by mankind.
#4 Dedicate: Jacques de Vos
The short feature on Jacques de Vos was maybe the one that brought up the strongest emotions in me, There is something mesmerizing about the way he portraits whales and orcas on film while freediving with them. Very few have been able to display their deep connection to one another and their ancient wisdom, as well as Jacques, does.
#5 Taking the Plunge by Taking the Plunge Crew
Taking the plunge is totally on the light side of things. It is none the less a great and most of all super cute animated short film about a man fighting to save the perfect proposal. He is aided by the cutest dumbo octopus in his quest to retrieve the ring. This short film reminds me of How to Train your Dragon under the sea.
